Overview

Happy Critics App is the actual product that 350+ local businesses pay for monthly — a SaaS dashboard for managing Google Business profiles, reviews, and local reputation. It includes a review management dashboard, automated AI-powered review responses, a community management layer for real Google Local Guides who visit businesses, profile analytics with ranking tracking, and multi-location support. Unlike the marketing website, this is the revenue engine itself. The design decisions here — information hierarchy, review response workflows, analytics clarity — directly impact retention, daily active usage, and expansion revenue. When a business owner opens this app every morning, the experience either reinforces their decision to pay or plants the first seed of churn.

The Challenge

Building a SaaS dashboard that business owners use daily is fundamentally different from building a marketing site. The marketing site converts in one visit; the app needs to deliver value on visit number 300. Happy Critics combines multiple complex product surfaces — review monitoring, automated responses, community management, profile analytics, ranking tracking — into a single interface that needs to feel simple to a local business owner who isn't technically sophisticated. The product design challenge: how do you make a tool that does five complex things feel like it does one simple thing? And how do you achieve self-serve scale — 350+ businesses — without a dedicated customer success team?

The Approach

The app was designed around the daily workflow of a local business owner: what do I need to see first, what needs my attention, what can I handle quickly. The review dashboard surfaces urgent items — new reviews, pending responses — before analytics, because action-oriented users engage more frequently than passive viewers. The automated response system reduces the most repetitive task to near-zero effort, which is how a €75/month tool justifies itself by saving hours of manual work. The onboarding flow mirrors the marketing site's three-step promise (sign up, connect Google Business, go live), creating consistency between what was promised and what is delivered. The community feature — coordinating real Google Local Guides — is embedded directly in the dashboard rather than living in a separate interface, making the most complex part of the product feel native rather than bolted on.
